Rugged Aluminum Design, Multiple Ports
Echo 15 Thunderbolt Dock Port Logos

Aluminum LogoSonnet designed the Echo 15 Pro+ Thunderbolt 2 Dock for maximum flexibility in use. The rugged aluminum case may be set horizontally, or vertically to save space on the desktop. For your convenience, USB 3.0, audio input, and audio output ports are placed on both the front and back of the enclosure, so you can leave frequently used devices connected to the back, and connect devices you disconnect more often to the front. The headphone jack on the front supports a mini TOSLINK optical digital audio cable, enabling you to pass multi-channel audio out to your A/V system. Dual Thunderbolt 2 ports enable the Echo 15 Pro+ Thunderbolt 2 Dock to support daisy chaining of Thunderbolt peripherals, and to be placed anywhere in a Thunderbolt device chain. You can even connect a Thunderbolt display, or other monitor type with an appropriate adapter, so you're not limited to a single type of display interface. Depending on the display, you could even place it on top of the Echo dock.

Optical DVD or Blu-Ray DiscBlu-ray Burner OnboardPro

If you've purchased a new iMac®, MacBook Air®, MacBook Pro® with Retina® Display, or Mac mini, you may have noticed something's missing—an optical drive. The Echo 15 Pro+ Thunderbolt 2 Dock includes one that covers all the bases. The 4x BD-R/8x DVD±RW drive burns and plays Blu-ray(1) discs, DVDs, and CDs.

Echo 15 Thunderbolt Dock Overview

Advanced USB 3.0 Feature Support

The Echo dock's USB 3.0 ports support UASP (USB Attached SCSI Protocol) and Wake On Demand (Wake On USB 3.0). UASP support ensures that UASP-enabled external drives connected to the dock achieve their maximum data transfer rate potential, with performance improved by up to 20% above the drive connected to a USB host without UASP support. Wake on demand support allows devices such as a keyboard scanner connected to the Echo dock's USB 3.0 ports to wake your computer.

Echo 15 Thunderbolt Dock Time Machine Backup

Add an Internal Drive for the Perfect Time Machine® Backup Companion.
The Echo 15 Pro+ Thunderbolt 2 Dock supports the installation of one 3.5" hard drive or two 2.5" 6 Gb/s SSDs, providing you an ideal solution for adding storage capacity to use as your Mac computer's Time Machine drive, or to back up your Mac's drive, without having to connect another external drive and its power brick.

Connect a Display

The Thunderbolt port on your computer is essentially a Mini DisplayPort video connection that adds high speed PCIe for data. This means that there is a broad range of inexpensive adapters (sold separately) that can bridge between Mini DisplayPort and common display interface types.

Display interface types that can be connected to your Echo 15 Pro+ Thunderbolt 2 Dock via Thunderbolt include:

• Thunderbolt Display – Direct Connect
• Mini DisplayPort – Direct Connect
• HDMI – Mini DisplayPort to HDMI Adapter
• Dual-Link DVI – Mini DisplayPort to Dual-Link DVI Adapter
• DVI – Mini DisplayPort to DVI Adapter
• VGA – Mini DisplayPort to VGA Adapter

Storage Space for a Time Machine® (Drive) or Pair of High Performance SSDs

Sonnet designed the Echo 15 Pro+ Thunderbolt 2 Dock with extra space, mounting hardware, and connectors for you to install one 3.5" SATA HDD (hard disk drive) or two 2.5" SSDs (solid state drives). Dual independent 6 Gb/s SATA interfaces deliver maximum performance to support a pair of SSDs at up to 700 MB/s, or an HDD at its maximum speeds. Add a high-capacity drive to use as your Mac's Time Machine drive, to back up your computer's data, or to store your ever growing media library. Optionally, you can install two high-performance SSDs for blazing-fast access to applications and files. Whichever choice you make, the drive or drives mount inside the Echo dock, so you can expand your storage without the fuss of adding another external drive, power brick, and cable clutter. Sonnet offers the Echo 15 Pro+ Thunderbolt 2 Dock without drives, or, exclusively through the Sonnet Online Store with a 4TB HDD or a pair of SSDs. You can also boot your Mac from a drive installed in the Echo dock, enabling you to make repairs to or recover data from a problematic drive in your computer.

Echo 15 Pro+ Thunderbolt 2 Dock Status Update – January 22, 2014
Following our last Echo 15 Thunderbolt 2 Dock status update, we received very positive feedback and valuable input that confirms these products were designed with the right feature sets. However, there has been an increasingly louder chorus of requests for them to be based on Thunderbolt 2 technology. We carefully considered this input, and, combined with recent clarification of requirements for Windows Thunderbolt compatibility, we have decided to upgrade these products to use Thunderbolt 2 chipsets. Here are the factors we considered in making this decision:

Everybody wants Thunderbolt 2 because it is the latest Thunderbolt technology available! We are listening.

Some workflows require Thunderbolt 2's 20Gbps bandwidth. With the Echo 15 docks' multiple options for connecting (internal SATA SSDs, eSATA, USB 3.0, FireWire 800, Gigabit Ethernet), transferring or editing files at full speed across multiple connections can potentially be throttled by the bandwidth of 10Gbps Thunderbolt. Upgrading the Echo docks to Thunderbolt 2 will make them more capable.

Many customers want to place the Echo dock first in the Thunderbolt daisy chain of devices and connect other Thunderbolt 2 devices downstream. When connected to a Thunderbolt 2 host, a Thunderbolt daisy chain can maintain Thunderbolt 2 bandwidth until a 10Gbps Thunderbolt device is connected, at which point all devices (even TB2) connected downstream connect at 10Gbps bandwidth.

Equipping the Echo docks with Thunderbolt 2 will ensure you won't regret being an early adopter. Sonnet planned on upgrading the Echo docks to feature Thunderbolt 2 in the future, but as development of these products took longer than expected, we reached the point where it made sense to upgrade them now with the latest technology. With the recent shipment of several Thunderbolt 2-to-PCIe card expansion chassis, our knowledge and experience is enabling us to quickly modify the dock design to support Thunderbolt 2.

Windows Thunderbolt compatibility requirements. It was recently clarified that Windows can only support a maximum of two PCIe controllers in one Thunderbolt device. The Echo 15 docks have five controllers (which is how they support so many interfaces and internal drives), and would be fully compatible with Thunderbolt 2-equipped Windows computers only if the docks were also based on Thunderbolt 2.

Moving to Thunderbolt 2 will further impact the release schedule of the Echo 15 docks, placing the new projected ship date in summer 2014. We will provide additional progress updates until the products ship.

At this time we would like to apologize for the additional delay in delivering the Echo 15 docks and express our thanks for your feedback, patience and encouragement.
