Expandable HD Performance
Sonnet’s award-winning Fusion D400RAID storage systems provide performance and data safety in the form of compact, affordable, transportable, RAID storage for the desktop. Designed for work environments where performance and fault tolerance are critical, Fusion D400RAID storage systems are fast enough to easily handle multiple video streams while simultaneously protecting the data, yet are flexible enough to be configured for any workflow.
With its drives configured as a protected RAID 5 group (4 drives striped with parity distributed across all group members), Fusion D400RAID can achieve 160MB/sec (AJA Kona 1080HD test), fast enough to handle three streams of uncompressed 10-bit NTSC, or multiple streams of DV, DVCPRO, HDV, and uncompressed SD video.
With drives formatted as a RAID 4 (DV RAID) or RAID 5 group, Fusion D400RAID systems offer fail-safe protection in the event of a drive failure. You can set up your system to provide visual and audible alerts, including e-mail notification. A failed drive can be swapped out and the RAID rebuilt in 2, 3 or 4 hours (2, 3, or 4TB configurations, respectively), or you can continue to work at reduced bandwidth while the RAID rebuilds in the background.
Brains and Brawn
The heart of the Fusion D400RAID storage system is the Sonnet PCI Express® RAID controller. This powerhouse is based on the latest-generation Intel® IOP348 RAID processor, which can handle the throughput from all the drives with plenty of overhead. The Sonnet RAID controller is configured with 256MB of ECC-protected RAM, especially important to maintain data stream writes as the disk array nears capacity.
Driving Force
Fusion D400RAID storage systems employ Enterprise/RAID Edition hard drives(2). These drives are subjected to hours of additional, stringent testing to check for soft errors, vibration, and other reliability predictors. Only the sturdiest drives pass these tests and are prepared with special RAID-optimized firmware. Enterprise/RAID drives offer higher MTBF (mean time between failure) specs, carry longer warranties than “desktop” drives, and are the building blocks of a super-reliable Fusion storage system.
Versatile Performance
These systems are ideal for use in mixed environments—various operating systems, editing applications and output demands requiring the flexibility and interoperability that Fusion D400RAID storage systems provide. Fusion D400RAID systems support Mac OS® X, Windows® XP, Windows Vista, and Linux. They are compatible with capture cards from AJA, Blackmagic Design, Matrox, and Bluefish444, and work with all mainstream video editing applications including Apple® Final Cut Pro® and Adobe® Premiere® Pro CS3.

Technical Notes:
(1) Although most hard drive manufacturers define 1 gigabyte as 1,000,000,000 byte, the computer operating systems usually calculate a gigabyte by dividing the bytes (whether it is disk capacity, file size, or system RAM) by 1,073,741,824 (230). This distinction may be a cause of confusion, as a hard disk with a manufacturer rating of 500GB may have its capacity reported by the operating system as 454.7GB. |

(2) Sonnet Technologies has qualified and specifies Enterprise/RAID edition hard drives for use in Fusion storage systems. These drives were chosen for their superior performance, error handling, and reliability characteristics, especially when used in RAID groups. Only use Enterprise/RAID edition hard drives in your Fusion storage system to ensure system reliability and performance. STANDARD DRIVES MAY NOT BE SUPPORTED AND MAY DEGRADE SYSTEM RELIABILITY AND PERFORMANCE. Sonnet has qualified and recommends the following Enterprise/RAID edition hard drives for use with Fusion D400RAID: 500GB Models • Hitachi Deskstar E7K500, model # HDS725050KLA360 • Hitachi Ultrastar A7K1000, model # HUA721050KLA330 • Seagate Barracuda ES, model # ST3500630NS • Western Digital RE3 Enterprise, model # WD5002ABYS 750GB Models • Hitachi Ultrastar A7K1000, model # HUA721075KLA330 • Seagate Barracuda ES, model # ST3750640NS 1TB Models • Hitachi Ultrastar A7K1000, model # HUA721010KLA330 There are unresolved technical issues in the Fusion D800RAID, R800RAID, and D400RAID product line with the following Enterprise/RAID edition drives, which are not recommended at this time: • 500GB Samsung Spinpoint F RAID, model # E502IJ • 750 GB Samsung Spinpoint F RAID, model # HE753LJ • 1TB Samsung Spinpoint F RAID, model # HE103UJ |

(3) Creating RAID volumes under Windows requires dynamic disk storage, a formatting option available with Windows Server 2003 SP1, Windows XP Professional (32- and 64-bit versions), or Windows Vista Enterprise or Ultimate (32- and 64-bit versions). In order to create RAID volumes larger than 2TB, you must do one of the following: Use the software configuration tools included with the Fusion storage to create volumes up to 2TB, concatenate (link together in a virtual chain) the volumes, and then format as NTFS. -OR- Use GPT formatting. Note that drives and volumes with GPT formatting are not visible to any version of Windows XP Professional, nor to the 32-bit version of Windows Server 2003 SP1. (4) Not compatible with a PCIe 2.0 slot (Slot #2 in 2008 Mac Pro). |
