You'll Feel SATAsfied Inside!

Do your storage capacity needs outweigh what your computer can support on its own? Stuff it—with Serial ATA drives, that is! Sonnet's high-performance Tempo™ SATA E4i 4-port Serial ATA host controller for PCI Express slots enables you to connect up to 4 additional internal SATA hard drives(1) for the perfect balance of easy expandability and superior performance. If you own a Power Mac G5, this card is an ideal companion to Sonnet’s G5 Jive™ internal drive mounting hardware for Power Mac G5 computers—along with your SATA drives, this combination is the most cost effective way for adding up to 12 Terabytes of high-performance storage capacity to your G5.

Do you need more speed? Tempo SATA E4i offers 3Gb/s per port data transfer support and gives you performance to burn. You'll get great performance from individual drives, but grouping up to four Serial ATA hard drives in a RAID 0 (striped) set(2) will provide astonishing sustained read/write performance numbers, enough to capture and process multiple streams of HD video. Need more data security? Set up your drives in a RAID 1 (mirrored) or RAID 10 (striped/mirrored) set for up to 6 Terabytes of data redundancy. When you need more flexibility and performance than offered by standard solutions, get a Tempo SATA E4i—it'll give you room to grow and blazing performance for the most demanding applications.

Technical Notes

  1. Western Digital manufactures Desktop edition (WD Caviar, Caviar SE, Caviar SE16, and Raptor X) hard drives and Enterprise (RAID) Edition (WD RE, RE2, and Raptor) hard drives. Each type of hard drive is designed to work specifically in either a desktop computer environment, or connected to a RAID controller (hardware or software-based). If you intend to configure Western Digital drives in a RAID set, Sonnet and WD recommend using only their Enterprise edition hard drives. For more information, see this Western Digital FAQ.
  2. Creating RAID volumes under Windows requires dynamic disk storage, a formatting option available with Windows 7 Professional, Enterprise, or Ultimate (32- and 64-bit versions), Windows Vista Enterprise or Ultimate (32- and 64-bit versions), or Windows XP Professional (32- and 64-bit versions). In order to create RAID volumes larger than 2TB, you must do one of the following: Span (link together in a virtual chain) the volumes, and then format them as NTFS. OR Use GPT formatting. Note that drives and volumes with GPT formatting are not visible to any version of Windows XP Professional, nor to the 32-bit version of Windows Server 2003 SP1.
  3. SATA drive hot-swapping is not natively supported in a desktop PC or server running Windows. SATA drives connected to Tempo SATA E4i appear to the system as a non-removable hard drive and there is no mechanism in Windows to prepare them for removal.
  4. Parallel ATA disk drives are supported when using Sonnet's Tempo Bridge or similar Serial ATA-to-Parallel ATA adapter.
