SATA drive enclosures offer flexibility not found in fixed drive installations inside a computer. Many offer swappable drive trays, which are perfect for managing daily backups and multiple projects, and most are portable. Some enclosures feature port multipliers, which enable up to five hard drives to communicate with the host adapter through one cable. Not all host adapter cards support port multipliers, but Tempo SATA E2P does—through its two ports, this card can handle up to ten(2) drives!

Tempo SATA E2P is versatile. It supports the RAID features of OS X and Windows. It also supports hot-swapping of drives under OS X. Installation is simple—just plug in the card to any available PCIe slot, start your computer, and install a driver. When you need to add flexible, portable storage to your setup, Tempo SATA E2P gets you connected.

Technical Notes

  1. Sonnet Tempo cards are compatible with most external SATA storage. However, external hard drives with USB 2.0/eSATA dual interface based on the Oxford Semiconductor OXU931DS storage controller chip may not be compatible with OS X when connected via SATA. Known issues are kernel panics occurring when the drive is connected, or the drive not being recognized by the operating system.

    eSATA Storage Note
  2. Support for up to 10 drives requires the use of drive enclosures employing either an FIS-based port multiplier or a hardware RAID controller.
  3. SATA drive hot swapping is not supported in a desktop or server PC running Windows natively. Drives connected to Tempo SATA E2P appear to the system as not-removable hard drives, and there is no mechanism in Windows to prepare them for removal.
  4. Only Tempo SATA E2P with serial numbers starting with A, B, or D are compatible; Tempo SATA E2P with serial numbers starting with C are not compatible in Power Mac G5. Revision D shipping Oct. 1, 2009.
  5. Not compatible with PCIe 3.0 slots.
  6. Locking feature of eSATA connector not supported in Xserve.
  7. When upgrading your OS X software you may need to reinstall your product's Sonnet driver software.

Works As Advertised!
"I
purchased this product to work with my eSATA G-Drives and G-RAID hard drives. I edit high definition video, so any extra speed I can add to the system is helpful.

Installation was very simple, although the directions are not very specific. I know the inner workings of my machine fairly well (Mac Pro) so I had no trouble installing the device.

Installation of drivers was simple and straight forward.

After that it's literally plug and play. I noticed an instant improvement in read times when quickly shuttling through HD timelines.

Overall I'm very satisfied with the device. It's a cheap speed upgrade and well worth the time and cost."

"
I've installed multiple E2P's in Mac Pros and they work well alongside Avid MC and Unity fiber cards. 2-3 times faster than FW800, I got actual transfer speeds of 140MB/s with LaCie drives. Hot-swapping works too!"
