Technical Notes

  • eGPU Breakaway Box models support up to a standard full-height, full-length, double-width card. Cards with three power connectors are not supported.
  • Acer Swift Thunderbolt 4 notebooks do not support eGPUs.
  • A few professional applications (such as DaVinci Resolve or Cinema 4D) have menu options to use the external GPU even if the app is run on the internal monitor. Final Cut Pro requires 10.14.1+ for external GPU acceleration.
  • Under macOS 10.14.6, a Mac mini is compatible with a Breakaway Box with Vega 56, Vega 64, WX 8200, and WX 9100. A Mac mini with a Breakaway Box with an RX 560/570/580/590 must be booted with a monitor connected to the Mac mini’s HDMI port. The monitor may be moved to the GPU after booting. This anomaly is fixed in macOS 10.15.7+.
  • See Using eGPU with Parallels Desktop for Mac.
  • Not compatible with VIVE Wireless Adapter.
  • Power adapter cable for Avid Pro Tools | HDX card sold separately.
  • For example, the AMD Radeon Pro W5700 may have a USB-C Alt-Mode DisplayPort output.
  • 8K displays require a GPU card that supports 8K displays.
  • Plus power delivery to laptop, if activated.
